Junctions for roads of different categories and traffic speeds

An elliptical PINAVIA is best suited for the intersection of roads of different categories, where – as a rule – traffic speeds may vary.

This structural drawing and its primary parameters are best suited for those cases where the road on the horizontal X axis is either a Category A or B road with a projected speed of approximately 100 km/h, and the secondary road along the Y axis is lower in category, with correspondingly lower speeds. As can be seen in the drawing, from a structural point of view the roadways and lanes of the intersecting roads may be equivalent to those in a symmetrical four-directional junction with the exception that the radii of curvature of the higher category road are correspondingly greater, the roadways are closer to the coordinate axis X and the junction forms an ellipse.
